There is a significant climate change at this point in our journey down the coast of China. We are now in a more tropical zone and you can tell the difference in both the heat and the humidity. The foliage is also more tropical. This area is similar to our home in Florida in both climate and flora. Xiamen is a moderately small city by Chinese standards. It has a population of about 5 million and is considered to be a resort city. There is a great deal of significant history here as this is where the Nationalist army left for Taiwan after Mao’s victory. Taiwan is only a short distance from this port city. We were supposed to also go to Taiwan but, the Chinese government suspended any cruise ship activity across the strait. That is why we spent three instead of two days in Shanghai.

After a day at sea, we arrived at what the Chinese call a small town, Qingdao. The population is only 8 million. This is the population of Chicago. Everything in China seems to be on a grand scale. This is a resort city and is used by the residents of Shanghai and Beijeng for their vacations.

Here is the next installment of my trip to China.
Today we saw The Forbidden City. This was occupied by the Chinese Emperors and their courts until 1911. It is a huge complex of buildings in the center of Beijeng and it consists of dozens of individual buildings. Each building has a specific rank. Feudalism in China even extended to buildings.
